Cancelling Plans Because of your Health

Everyone cancels plans from time to time

Sometimes you can’t be bothered, can’t afford it or just don’t want to go

But with chronic illness sometimes your choice is between today and tomorrow

You learn to prioritise some plans over others

Sometimes you have to cancel to ensure you can attend another activity

Other times you don’t have a choice at all

Your body decides it can’t do anything else and you can only rest

Or you still try to attend anyway and either not enjoy yourself or overdo it and make everything worse

It can be difficult to get others to understand this

They try to peer pressure you into going anyway

Or you really wanted to go but you know you won’t be able to

Either way it’s not a nice feeling

You just have to respect and understand your own body and mind

Realise you are not letting others or yourself down

But if you need to cancel plans it is for your health

You are doing exactly what your body and mind need

Try not to overthink it

Distract yourself with whatever you can manage

Playing a game, watching TV or even reading a book

Unfortunately it is a reality of chronic illness

  1. Thank you for sharing this. I have psoriatic arthritis and people truly don’t understand that I need recovery days in between hangouts. Thank you for writing this post because no I feel less alone. πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks for your kind words. I do this blog to help others feel less alone. We are the only ones who truly understand what chronic illness and pain feel like x

It’s so true, I’ve missed so many things that I’ve been looking forward to. And unfortunately, I’ve lost a lot of friends along the way.
    Chronic illness sucks!

I’ve started a blog about my life with chronic illness, and how art & craft help me cope, maybe you’d like to check it out? I’d love to see you there! Either way I look forward to reading more about your life.
